Map
West of Grasse, the landscape opens out into a wide plane
at the heart of which is the beautiful Lac St Cassien. A range of
hills marks the northern boundary, each topped with a fortified
medieval village with its distinctive stone castle and church
spire. This string of hilltop villages runs east-west starting with
the village of Montauroux followed by Tourrettes, Fayence, Callian
and then finally Seillans in the distance.
Of these villages Fayence is perhaps the best known. Set at
350 metres above sea level, Fayence is a lively town full of shops
and restaurants as well as a number of historic sites and panoramic
views down to the coast. The town is surrounded by wine production
where scores of producers make the excellent local rose wine of the
region. These vineyards can be visited and offer free tastings
adding to Fayence's many holiday attractions, situated within an
hour's drive of Cannes and St Tropez.
