Antibes

About midway along the French Riviera, between the glitz of Cannes and grandeur of Nice, you'll find the historic port town of Antibes and the famous Cap d'Antibes. Smaller but perhaps more authentic than its neighbours, Antibes is predominantly a port, with the entrance to the harbour guarded by ancient ramparts. Today Antibes supports a substantial yacht charter business which gives the old town a lively 'lived-in' atmosphere, buzzing with restaurants, bars and music venues which go on into the early hours. Sunrise over the ramparts is a transcendental experience as you follow the path along the old sea walls and look out across the still waters of the Mediterranean. The pretty beach of La Garoupe brings you to the edge of town and the Cap d'Antibes, one of the most sought after addresses of the Cote d'Azur. Better beaches are to be found heading west to the seaside resort of Juan les Pins famous for its annual Jazz Festival and lively nightlife.

Beaulieu-sur-Mer

Beaulieu-sur-Mer captures the quiet elegance of the French Riviera. Nestled between the sea and palm-lined promenades, this refined coastal gem exudes timeless charm. A place where luxury meets serenity. The perfect setting to experience the true essence of the Mediterranean.

There are few city promenades more dazzling than La Croisette in Cannes. Whatever the season, this beautiful sea-front promenade hosts film stars, tourist and local joggers along its 2km espalande. But showy visitors apart, Cannes has a plenty to boast for itself. The town is set within a beautiful bay, one long curving sandy beach lined with beach-front restaurants where you can enjoy superb fresh seafood washed down with a light Chablis and still wriggle your toes in the sand. All this against a backdrop of some of the world's most famous hotels such as the Majestic, the Cannes Carlton and the Martinez. Visitors don't come to Cannes for history, but ironically it's a town of tradition in the making. People come to Cannes to compete for the Palm d'Or, to see and to be seen among the myriad of fun lovers and attention seekers.

For old-style Riviera glamour, the charm of the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat cannot be beaten. This forested peninsula between Nice and Monaco has long attracted the rich and famous, drawn by the amazing light, peace and stunning views of the Mediterranean and the craggy Provençal coastline. Despite attracting millionaires and jet setters for over a century, the Cap Ferrat has remained remarkably unspoilt. As you stroll along its coastal footpaths, you catch tantalising glimpses of grand villas and secret gardens, and almost expect to bump into David Niven, Somerset Maugham, or Charlie Chaplin - all of whom once had homes here. Many of today's international celebrities still live here. Yet the pretty village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat retains a 'village' feel with local shops, bars and restaurants, and a short stroll away the secluded beaches Paloma, Passable and Cro de Pei Pin. Despite the away-from-it-all feel, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is only 25 minutes from Nice and even closer to Monte Carlo.

No wonder pictures of Villefranche-sur-Mer are in all the guidebooks; it's a photographer's paradise.  Brightly painted fishing boats bob alongside Villefranche's pretty quayside lined with enticing restaurants whose blackboards proclaim freshly caught 'loup de mer', 'st pierre', 'rouget' and other delices of the Mediterranean. Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Fifteen kilometres north of Nice, set high up on the hills with fantastic views of the Mediterranean, Vence has been the inspiration for generations of famous painters: Chagall, Dufy, Matisse all painted here as did Dubuffet and Soutine who painted the oak in the village which still stands today. Restaurants abound and two have Michelin accreditation, the Jacques Maximin which has 2 stars and the well-regarded 1 star Commanderie but many others are also excellent. Much smaller, but perhaps better known is the idyllic hilltop village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, located just 2km west of Vence. St Paul abounds in the picturesque - stone archways, cobbled streets and hundred year old alleys lined with craft shops and galleries. Just outside the walled village is The Columbe d'Or, a world famous restaurant and hotel which during the last century attracted artists like Cezanne and Matisse. Those who couldn't pay, traded paintings for their board and lodging and their works still hang in the bar today.

Tanneron

Located right on the edge of the Alpes Maritimes, Tanneron is the most eastern town of the 'Pays de Fayence'. This destination is characterized by its beautiful hills planted with mimosa, strawberries, floral crops, pine and chestnut trees. From Tanneron you will enjoy the most breathtaking views to the Mediterranean, and the drive down to the coast is less than 15 minutes.

Taradeau

Located along the important Roman road 'Via Aurelia', Taradeau was a prosperous village in the Gallo-Roman times. Traces of this past can still be seen in the remains of the Oppidum, the Roman Chapel of Saint Martin, and the Taradel Tower, all located in a dominant position overlooking the village. From Taradeau, you can also visit the picturesque fortified medieval town of Lorgues and the surrounding countryside adorned with olive groves, lavender fields, and vineyards. This beautiful region is famous for its wines produced by such well-known domaines as Domaines Ott, Chateau Roubine, Chateau de Berne, and Chateau les Crostes. The artificial Lac de Sainte-Croix lake and the Gorges du Verdon, a 25-kilometre long river canyon with turquoise water and breathtaking sceneries, are about 55 km away and perfect for numerous activities such as sunbathing, swimming, hiking, climbing, fishing, canoeing, rafting, and paragliding.

Tourrettes-sur-Loup

Tourrettes-sur-Loup is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in the hinterland of the Côte d'Azur: the typical postcard. Set on a dominant position on its rocky outcrop, Tourrettes-sur-Loup drops into the valley and offers a splendid panoramic view of the entire coastline from Nice to the Estérel! You will be charmed by its beautiful cobbled and flowery streets, its local craft shops and cosy Michelin-starred restaurants. The many quiet and sleepy cats that wander through the alleys add to the peaceful atmosphere. But Tourrettes is also known for its violets and its famous Violet Festival which takes place every year in March, with its parade of flower floats and flower battles. This village has kept the authentic soul of a bohemian artist, far away from the bling-bling of the nearby village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. It is still preserved from the hordes of tourists... but for how long?

Valbonne

Among the Cote d'Azur villages none is as alluring as Valbonne, the former Roman settlement of Valis Bona or 'beautiful valley'. Nestling along the banks of the River Brague, Valbonne is defined by shaded streams and the forested hills of the Parc Natural with the mountains of the pre-Alps rising in the background. Unlike many villages of the Cote d'Azur which follow the mountain contours, Valbonne is constructed on a grid pattern, in true Roman fashion, enclosed by old town walls. Within the walls are picturesque streets of ancient stone houses, differentiated by their wooden studded doorways and painted shutters. At the heart of the grid is the Place des Arcades, a magnificent medieval cobbled town square surrounded by wide arches under which cool bars and gourmet restaurants compete for attention. The lively restaurant scene of Valbonne becomes a magnet for holiday makers staying at the exclusive private villas dotted among the neighbouring villages of Opio, Roquefort and Plascassier.

Vence

Fifteen kilometres north of Nice, set high up on the hills with fantastic views of the Mediterranean, Vence has been the inspiration for generations of famous painters: Chagall, Dufy, Matisse all painted here as did Dubuffet and Soutine who painted the oak in the village which still stands today. Restaurants abound and two have Michelin accreditation, the Jacques Maximin which has 2 stars and the well-regarded 1 star Commanderie but many others are also excellent. Much smaller, but perhaps better known is the idyllic hilltop village of St Paul De Vence, located just 2km west of Vence.

Provence

Provence, images of lavender fields and olive groves, old stone farmhouses and ancient villages, Provence made famous by Peter Maille's book 'A Year in Provence', exceeds its reputation. Covering a vast area of the South of France, with its diverse mountain and plateau landscapes, Provence can be divided into two distinct regions: Les Alpilles and the Luberon. Les Alpilles is characterized by quaint stone villages and large country estates with vineyards impregnated with pale rocky outcrops. The area is dominated by the grand university town of Aix-en-Provence and its smaller, but equally picturesque, sister Saint-Remy-de-Provence. Located East of Avignon is the Luberon, a spectacularly beautiful part of Provence with its national park of red mountains, lavender fields and historic villages each with a charm of its own. The village of Gordes with its impressive cathedral, the sheer red rocks of Roussillon, Goult with its famous windmill and many more make this a wonderful choice for a South of France holiday rental.

Cote d'Azur Villas has a hand-picked selection of holiday rental villas in Provence. They are generally beautifully restored houses often with extensive grounds and many within a short distance of a village. Provence is full of things to do and see from the wonderfully preserved Roman Amphitheatres at Nimes and Arles to the spectacular sound and light show in the Roman quarry at Les Baux de Provence. Equally exciting is the food scene in Provence from hearty local Provençal cooking through to Michelin starred chefs. This is a more peaceful, authentic part of the South of France, full of history, beautiful pale stone buildings and Roman ruins.

Bonnieux

This is one of the prettiest villages of the Luberon. Situated at 420 metres above sea level, the medieval village of Bonnieux dominates the Luberon with spectacular views from the rampart walls of the National Park and the mountain peaks. The village is characterized by its narrow winding streets, ancient fortifications, and churches. There are remains of Gallo-Roman villas in and around Bonnieux as well as the magnificent 46-metre Pont Julian built during the Augustan period. The Via Domita, one of the main roads of the Roman Empire linking Spain to Italy, crossed Bonnieux making it an area of major significance. For centuries after the Romans, Bonnieux remained an important settlement. Today it is the capital of the Vaucluse department covering about 50 km2 and a bustling village of restaurants, shops and cafés offering some of the best views over mountains and valleys of the northern Luberon and the vineyards stretching to the south.

Cabrieres d'Avignon

Cabrières d'Avignon is a charming small village situated at the foot of the Monts de Vaucluse facing the Luberon, between the towns of Gordes and L'Isle sur la Sorgue. The village has managed to maintain an authentic charm with restored, typically Provencal dry-stone houses lining the streets. There is also a medieval chateau built by the viscount of Cavaillon in the 11th and 12th centuries which is now a national heritage site. A 5-hectare forest of majestic cedars planted to the north of the village in 1860 is the perfect setting for a hike or a picnic. You can also take a walk along the 'Mur de la peste', a wall built to protect the inhabitants from the Great Plague of Marseille in 1720, or visit the quaint Lavender Museum in the neighbouring hamlet of Coustellet.

Eygalieres

Eygalières is a charming authentic medieval village surrounded by picturesque hills, olive groves and vineyards, located close to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in Les Alpilles region. Its narrow streets lined with beautiful stone houses have a good variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants, and on Friday morning they are transformed into a lively Provencal market with an abundance of local produce and many other delights to tempt you.

Gordes

Located to the West of the Luberon National Park, the village of Gordes has been designated one of the 100 most beautiful villages in France and it's easy to understand why. Set atop a dramatic rocky ridge, Gordes dominates the surrounding countryside with an impressive 16th century cathedral and spectacular views. Below is the Abbaye de Sénanque, a beautiful old Cistercian abbey bathed in lavender fields where monks still produce their secret liquor and cultivate honey. The village of Gordes is a maze of narrow streets and alleyways, bustling with local life and some excellent gourmet restaurants. Driving deeper into the Luberon you come to the sheer red rocks of Roussillon, the village of Goult named after the family who built the big castle, and Cabrières d'Avignon, a picturesque village where you can still find traditional peasant houses or "bories" some of which have been converted into sumptuous private properties available for holiday rental.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Twenty-five miles east of Avignon, between Carpentras and Cavillion in deepest Provence, is the must-see town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Locals call it an island city defined by the canals which transect it, bordered by pretty shops and restaurants overlooking the water, as well as by the narrow streets with small streams running through them. It's a delightful place to stroll around with the soothing sound of running water constantly in the background. Occasionally you come across a moss-covered wheel harking back to earlier times when river power was used to drive the local silk and paper industries. Art galleries abound including the famous Maison René Char museum showing such greats as Miró and Dufy. But foremost, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is renowned for antiques housing more than 300 shops and dealers with an internationally renowned Antiques Fair held every Easter and August.

Lacoste

Lacoste is a quiet perched medieval village with steep cobblestone streets of beautiful and fascinating architecture leading up to the remains of the 11th century chateau, once owned by the infamous Marquis de Sade. Stunning views of the Luberon valley can be admired from here and from a few of the cafés with suspended terraces. In summer there is a Provencal market in the village every Tuesday morning, a music festival at the end of July and in mid-August a concert is held in the stone quarry near the Chateau.

Lagnes

Located near the famous village of L'Isle sur la Sorgue that you can reach by bike, Lagnes is a charming village on the hills with a 13th century castle on top. With its medieval atmosphere and its narrow streets with flowery facades, Lagnes concentrates the beauty of Provence and gives you quick access to all the beautiful other villages around such as Gordes, Lacoste, Menerbes.

Located some 22 km from Avignon and 15 km from Arles and bordering the villages of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Maussane-les-Alpilles, Paradou, Fontvieille, and Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, Les Baux-de-Provence is the perfect base for exploring the region and easily accessible from all directions.

Maussane is famous for its olive production and in the 19th century was home to several windmills used to produce olive oil. Today two ancient oil mills still stand and are used to make olive oil of the highest quality with an Appellation d'Origine Protégée - Protected Designation of Origin.
